Retired Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin has suggested that either Dustin Martin or Liam Baker won’t remain at the club in 2025, potentially signaling the beginning of a breakup of the Tiger dynasty.
Cotchin’s remarks come in the midst of reports indicating that Daniel Rioli, a pivotal player for Richmond, explored the facilities of the Gold Coast Suns during the club’s bye week in Queensland. The Suns are now led by three-time Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick.
Both Baker and Martin are approaching the end of their contracts in 2024, with Baker drawing considerable interest from clubs in Western Australia, indicating a potential return “home.”
Martin, a three-time Norm Smith medallist, will become an unrestricted free agent, with speculations linking him to a reunion with Hardwick at the Suns.
Cotchin, having shared the field with both players for an extended period, expressed doubts about both Martin and Baker donning the yellow and black next season. He highlighted the substantial offers being made to Baker from Western Australian clubs as a significant factor that might influence his decision.
Baker previously considered offers from West Coast and Fremantle in 2022 before opting to remain with Richmond. However, recent developments, including his property purchase in Perth, have reignited speculation about his potential move back west.
Martin, at 32, has faced questions about his future in the AFL, with some questioning his motivation to continue after achieving three premierships. Despite persistent retirement rumors, Martin’s manager, Ralph Carr, refuted such claims as recently as April 9.
Meanwhile, Rioli’s visit to the Gold Coast and his meeting with Hardwick during the bye week have added to the intrigue surrounding player movements, although he remains contracted to Richmond until 2027.
