Ohio State Buckeyes Pursuing Michigan State DL Transfer Derrick Harmon

The Ohio State Buckeyes are looking to bolster their defensive line for the upcoming season, and they have set their sights on Michigan State transfer Derrick Harmon.

If you’re experiencing a sense of déjà vu, you’re not mistaken.

In December, the Buckeyes were optimistic about securing Harmon’s commitment until he withdrew from the transfer portal, opting to remain with the Spartans, albeit temporarily.

Harmon visited Ohio State on December 12, along with Oregon and Auburn, before ultimately choosing to stay at Michigan State. However, he has since re-entered the transfer portal, providing the Buckeyes with another opportunity to recruit him.

Last season, Harmon contributed 40 tackles, with 3.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks, for a Michigan State team that finished with a 4-8 record and missed out on a bowl game.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Colorado and USC are currently the top contenders to secure Harmon’s commitment, despite his status as an All-Big Ten player last year. Nevertheless, Ohio State remains actively engaged in pursuing him.

“On3’s Steve Wiltfong and I have received information from sources indicating that five teams are under consideration this time: Colorado, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oregon, and USC,” Nakos reported. “Both Colorado and USC have hosted visits since Harmon entered the transfer portal over a week ago. Although he was initially scheduled to visit Miami earlier this week, that trip was canceled.”

Throughout his three seasons with the Spartans, the 6-5, 320-pound Harmon has accumulated 71 total tackles, including 6.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. Additionally, he has recorded two passes defended, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble across 24 career games.

While the Buckeyes currently boast a formidable defensive front featuring Tyliek Williams and Ty Hamilton at the defensive tackle positions, the potential addition of Harmon could elevate Ohio State’s defensive line to new heights.
