Draper, appearing on the Clubby Sports 200+ podcast in a journalistic capacity, asserted that injured Bulldogs star Bailey Smith might seek a new club next season if Beveridge remains at the helm. Beveridge, a coach with a contract extending until the conclusion of the 2025 season, has faced speculation regarding player discontent.
During the podcast, Draper suggested potential exits of players such as Bailey Dale, Jack Macrae, and Caleb Daniel, with Smith specifically mentioned as “gone.” These remarks fueled ongoing speculation, prompting the Bulldogs to reportedly demand an apology on Wednesday.
Essendon officials allegedly extended apologies to Beveridge on Wednesday, with Draper also issuing a personal apology. While the club reportedly reprimanded Draper in private discussions, no formal disciplinary measures were taken.
Beveridge addressed the situation during a scheduled press conference, characterizing the comments as “bizarre” and expressing a focus on supporting his players amid external distractions.
