Fremantle is considering utilizing veteran small forward Michael Walters in the substitute role in the upcoming week to manage workload, following the successful management of star teammate Nat Fyfe against Richmond last Sunday.
Fyfe assumed the substitute role in round eight, strategically chosen by the Dockers due to a short turnaround, as planned during preseason preparations. Coach Longmuir indicated that Walters, having played every game this season and contributed eight goals, could potentially benefit from a similar rest within the next fortnight, particularly as fellow small forward Sam Switkowski nears return from concussion.
“We need to prioritize his well-being, adopting a similar approach as we did with Fyfe,” Longmuir stated on Wednesday. “We’ll assess his training today, and if not this week, then perhaps the following week. The substitute role presents a viable option, allowing involvement and influence both on and off the field.”
Fyfe has already been managed twice this season, including being rested during the final quarter against North Melbourne in round two, and playing limited game time against Richmond last Sunday.
“Even following his standout performances, we’ve remained proactive in managing Fyfe’s workload,” Longmuir explained. “He’s eager to maintain momentum, but we recognize the importance of preserving his long-term fitness.”
Switkowski is aiming for a return to the field after recovering from concussion sustained in round five. While his recovery has taken longer than anticipated, he has completed all required training and awaits clearance for selection.
Regarding other player updates, Longmuir expressed confidence in ruckman Sean Darcy’s availability despite a calf issue, with a fitness assessment scheduled for tomorrow. Ahead of the matchup against the Swans, Longmuir emphasized the need to counter their midfield strengths while also asserting Fremantle’s own capabilities.
“Our approach will be proactive, focusing on our midfield strengths while respecting the threats posed by Heeney, Warner, and Gulden,” Longmuir stated. “We aim to maintain our assertiveness rather than adopt a purely defensive stance, ensuring we challenge Sydney’s midfield while staying true to our game plan.”
