Texas Longhorns Eyeing Oregon Transfer Johnny Bowens

The Texas Longhorns are actively exploring options in the NCAA Transfer Portal, with recent reports indicating their interest in Oregon defensive line transfer Johnny Bowens. Initially choosing Oregon over Texas and Texas A&M as part of the 2023 class, Bowens is now being considered by Texas, according to sources cited by On3’s Pete Nakos. This development follows the recent commitment of TCU transfer defensive tackle Damonic Williams to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Nakos reported, “Texas is now eyeing another defensive tackle.” Steve Wiltfong of On3 added that Texas is a school to watch for Bowens, who retains four years of eligibility. Despite being a former four-star recruit and a top-300 prospect in the 2023 class, Bowens saw limited action, tallying two tackles in three games during his true freshman season with the Ducks.

The Longhorns’ interest in Bowens underscores their focus on bolstering the interior defensive line via the transfer portal this offseason. Just weeks ago, former Arizona defensive tackle Bill Norton joined Texas, marking the second addition from the Wildcats this offseason, alongside Tiaoalii Savea.

Originally from Converse, Texas, Bowens was highly regarded as a consensus four-star recruit, ranked No. 206 nationally, No. 23 among defensive linemen, and No. 36 in Texas in the On3 Industry Rankings. In the transfer portal rankings, Bowens is positioned at No. 392 overall and No. 35 among defensive linemen, according to On3.
