Tampa Bay Rays’ Ryan Pepiot Likely to Hit Injured List After Line Drive Impact

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Ryan Pepiot is poised to be placed on the injured list come Wednesday, a development that follows his departure from Sunday’s game due to a direct hit to his left calf by a 107.5 mph line drive from the New York Mets’ Starling Marte.

“We’ll likely have more updates tomorrow, but it seems probable,” remarked Rays manager Kevin Cash following Tuesday night’s 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Ahead of the game, Cash noted that Pepiot was slated for an additional CT scan upon his arrival at the ballpark, as he reported feeling more discomfort than initially anticipated. Cash confirmed that the scan yielded no evidence of fractures.

Despite collapsing to the ground immediately upon impact from Marte’s forceful hit, Pepiot managed to rise unassisted. Nevertheless, he was withdrawn from the game after completing a couple of warm-up pitches. Pepiot engaged in light catch activities on Monday.

Pepiot boasts a 3-2 record with a 3.68 ERA in seven starts. He was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers last December in a trade that saw the Rays trade ace Tyler Glasnow to the National League club.

Right-hander Taj Bradley is anticipated to assume Pepiot’s spot in the rotation after being sidelined for the entirety of the season due to a right pectoral strain.

Bradley rejoined the team over the weekend but was not immediately added to the roster following two starts at Triple-A Durham, during which he surrendered one run and two hits across 11 innings.
