Jayhawks Transfer Portal Commit Riley Kugel Set to Leave Kansas Basketball Squad

According to CBS Sports reporter Matt Norlander, the Kansas basketball program is parting ways with one of their previously committed transfer portal prospects, Riley Kugel, who was previously associated with the Florida Gators.

Kugel was anticipated to be a significant addition to the fall’s super transfer portal class, which also included Rylan Griffen, AJ Storr, and Zeke Mayo, alongside incoming freshmen Flory Bidunga and Rakease Passmore.

With the current roster comprising 11 players, and a 12th, Johnny Furphy, exploring options for the 2024 NBA Draft, Head Coach Bill Self suggested in an interview with Andy Katz that Furphy is likely to remain in the draft pool, potentially forgoing a return to Kansas. Self also briefly addressed Kugel’s situation.

If both Kugel and Furphy indeed conclude their association with the program, Self will have at least one, possibly two, scholarships to allocate. Kansas University (KU) still has one more scholarship to relinquish either this year or the next due to self-imposed penalties.

Considering the existing roster structure, it appears probable that Self will soon add another player from the portal. He might prioritize specific attributes such as defensive prowess, three-point shooting proficiency, or perhaps a player in need of developmental opportunities. The selection could be a one-season eligibility player or someone with potential for multiple years at the university.

It’s almost certain that Self has continued recruiting efforts to some extent. The plan likely involves adding one more player, thereby accepting the scholarship penalty this season, while also allowing flexibility if Furphy chooses to return. In such a scenario, Self could conclude the penalty next season.

Nonetheless, the current roster exhibits greater strength and depth compared to previous seasons. There’s enhanced depth in both the frontcourt and backcourt positions. The addition of Bidunga, along with Zach Clemence coming off his redshirt season, augments talent and depth in the frontline.

The forthcoming signings for KU will be of considerable interest, as Self undoubtedly has his sights set on several potential prospects. The anticipation for November’s developments is palpable.
