Sydney Roosters Secure Signing of David Fifita

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the Sydney Roosters have emerged victorious in the race to secure the signature of Gold Coast and Queensland forward David Fifita. The report indicates that Fifita will join Trent Robinson’s team starting from the next season. Although there has been no official confirmation from the Roosters yet, it’s a significant acquisition for the club.

The Panthers, on the other hand, made a substantial recruitment play for the 24-year-old but narrowly missed out on signing him. Panthers CEO Matt Cameron had been awaiting a response from Fifita’s management after the club finalized their offer last weekend, following a meeting between Fifita and Panthers coach Ivan Cleary.

Earlier today, Fifita informed the Titans that he would not be taking up the option to stay at the club next season. Titans coach Des Hasler expressed disappointment but acknowledged that player movements are part of the game.

Fifita burst onto the rugby league scene in 2018 with the Brisbane Broncos and quickly made his mark, earning selection for Queensland in State of Origin just a year later. However, his time at the Titans since 2021 has seen him fall short of his full potential, according to many in the game.

One intriguing aspect of the Fifita saga was the involvement of his partner, Shaylee Bent, who plays for the Titans in the NRLW. Despite her ties to Penrith, where she is a junior and still has family, it appears Bent will move to a Sydney club next year.

The Roosters managed to fend off Penrith’s offer, securing Fifita’s services for what is reported to be a significant three-year deal worth $850,000 per season.
