Cam McCarthy, who graced the AFL from 2014 to 2020, was discovered deceased at Lake Coogee in Perth on Thursday evening, a somber announcement confirmed by both clubs on Friday afternoon.
Authorities stated, “The death is being treated as non-suspicious,” with WA Police indicating that a coronial report is underway.
The West Australian-born athlete was selected by GWS with pick No.14 in the 2013 national draft.
Having played 21 matches for the Giants, McCarthy departed the Sydney club at the conclusion of the 2015 season due to mental health challenges and homesickness.
Following unsuccessful attempts to secure a transfer to Fremantle for the 2016 season, McCarthy took a hiatus from AFL before joining the Dockers.
The gifted forward featured in 49 games for Fremantle over four seasons from 2017 until his delisting at the end of the 2020 season. During his final season in the AFL system, McCarthy was diagnosed with epilepsy after collapsing during training.
In total, the talented forward amassed 70 AFL appearances and kicked 99 goals.
Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick conveyed the club’s profound condolences to McCarthy’s family, highlighting his character and talents.
GWS CEO Dave Matthews also expressed the club’s sorrow over McCarthy’s passing, emphasizing his impact on players and staff during his time with the Giants.
