K-State Wildcats Interested in Former KU Commit Riley Kugel

Riley Kugel’s transfer saga serves as a stark reminder of the ever-changing landscape of college basketball recruiting. The 6-foot-5 guard, formerly with the Florida Gators, initially committed to the Kansas Jayhawks for the upcoming season back in late March, marking Bill Self’s first transfer addition of the offseason. However, recent developments have thrown his destination into uncertainty. Self hinted on the NCAA March Madness podcast that Kugel’s arrival at KU is now uncertain, with speculation suggesting an academic issue may be to blame.

As a result, Kugel finds himself back in the transfer portal, once again exploring his options. Among those showing interest are the Kansas State Wildcats, along with Mississippi State and other programs. While it would be unconventional for a player to switch from KU to K-State within a few months, the current landscape of college basketball transfers is anything but typical. Commitments and financial-aid agreements are non-binding until enrollment, allowing players flexibility in their decisions.

Despite his modest stats at Florida, averaging 9.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 33 games, Kugel’s athleticism and highlight reel make him an intriguing prospect for the Wildcats. With K-State coach Jerome Tang actively seeking four more players to round out the roster, Kugel could potentially fill one of those spots. The Wildcats have undergone significant roster turnover this offseason, losing 10 scholarship players while adding several transfers and high school recruit David Castillo. Kugel could be the next piece in the puzzle for K-State.
