Head coach Deion Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes
The Colorado Buffaloes garnered significant attention last year with Deion Sanders joining the team in Boulder. However, one particular incident sparked controversy. Oregon coach Dan Lanning, with ESPN cameras rolling, criticized Coach Prime and the Buffaloes in the locker room, stating, “They’re playing for clicks, we’re playing for wins.”
Oregon backed up Lanning’s words with a decisive 42-6 victory over Colorado to kick off Pac-12 play. Sanders initially refrained from responding to Lanning’s remarks but addressed the situation nine months later on the Full Send podcast.
“It’s funny how you say that, but the camera was on when you said that,” Sanders remarked about Lanning. “So who is playing for the click?”
Sanders pointed out the lack of further comments from the Ducks’ locker room following Lanning’s speech. Former Buffs player Cormani McClain even referenced Lanning’s quote after leaving Boulder last month. However, Sanders seems confident he will have the final say.
“Did you hear any other speech that he made during the whole season?” Sanders asked. “Who is playing for the click? This is what I really do. In high school, you can date it back on YouTube or whatever, this is what I do with my team, this is who we are. It’s not playing for something or playing for a click, why would I need exposure?”
Colorado ended the season with four wins after assembling a diverse roster. They aim to improve in Coach Prime’s second year. Meanwhile, Oregon faces tougher competition in the Big Ten this year. Time will tell if the Ducks can generate more “clicks” in 2024.
