**PHILADELPHIA (CBS)** — Kody Clemens didn’t make the Opening Day roster, only joining the Philadelphia Phillies because of Trea Turner’s left hamstring strain. However, Clemens’ recent performance at the plate might earn him a more permanent spot on the team.
Clemens has been impressive since being called up, highlighted by his clutch hitting over the weekend. On Sunday, despite facing a left-handed reliever, Clemens delivered a two-run double, finishing a 4-for-7 weekend with three extra-base hits, three runs, and three RBIs. This followed a game-tying home run he hit on Saturday that sparked a Phillies comeback victory.
“He’s just barreling up everything,” manager Rob Thomson said. “He’s seeing the ball really well and having really good at-bats. Might as well just stick with him.”
Bryce Harper praised Clemens for his big league at-bats and consistent performance, noting that Clemens has been a valuable asset whether starting or coming off the bench. Clemens has a .321 average, three home runs, and 10 RBIs in 28 at-bats, with a slugging percentage of .821 and an OPS of 1.166.
Clemens is making a strong case to stay on the roster even after Turner returns. Despite being the 26th man on the roster, he’s shown his versatility and willingness to adapt, possibly even moving to the outfield.
“It’s tough to think about that,” Clemens said. “I just try to go one day at a time, believe in myself, and contribute to the team by having quality at-bats and playing good defense.”
With several roster decisions looming, Clemens’ performance in the coming weeks could solidify his spot on the team. Regardless of the outcome, he has certainly made a compelling case for himself.
The Phillies will have to make some tough decisions, but Clemens deserves credit for forcing their hand.
