The Canterbury Bulldogs are reportedly infuriated by the news that Matt Burton has been named as the 18th man for NSW in State of Origin I, as it means he won’t be available for their match against Newcastle on Friday night. Sitting at 10th place on the NRL ladder heading into Round 13, the Bulldogs are eager to make a push into the top-eight.

However, due to the current rules, Burton will not be permitted to play for the Bulldogs this weekend as he is part of the game-day team for the Blues, with the possibility of being activated if needed due to foul play. This differs from past years when the 18th man was released from State of Origin camp to play club footy the weekend before the match.

In contrast, Luke Keary, who is the 19th man for NSW and on standby for halfback Nicho Hynes, will be allowed to play for the Roosters against the Cowboys on Sunday. This discrepancy has reportedly left the Bulldogs “privately fuming.”

Dave Riccio of News Corp elaborated on the situation, stating on NRL 360 that the Bulldogs are deeply disappointed, particularly given Burton’s significant influence on the team. He suggested that there should be some flexibility or adjustment in the rules regarding the availability of the 18th player.

There is speculation that NSW coach Michael Maguire may promote Burton into the 17-man squad for Origin I, providing coverage in the backs in case of injury during the game. Laurie Daley and others have floated this theory, highlighting the importance of having a utility player available.

While the situation is considered unlucky and unfair to the Bulldogs, Braith Anasta pointed out that the current setup requires the 18th man to cover multiple positions, necessitating their presence at every training session.
