Adrian Hanauer Opens Up: Sounders’ Off-Field Challenges and Budgetary Strategy Unveiled”

The majority owner of the Sounders assures that investments are forthcoming, although he refrains from specifying an exact timeline.

Adrian Hanauer’s journey with the Seattle Sounders began formally in 2002 when he assumed the role of managing partner for the USL team. His early decisions included appointing Brian Schmetzer as head coach. Alongside his business responsibilities, he also served as the team’s general manager during the initial five years of the Sounders’ MLS venture.

My initial encounter with Hanauer was in 2010, shortly after I began covering Sounder at Heart. I was struck by his enthusiasm to discuss both the business and sporting facets of the team.

Since stepping down as GM after the 2014 season and assuming the majority ownership in 2015, Hanauer’s role with the Sounders has evolved. Despite fewer direct interactions, his involvement behind the scenes remains steadfast. Hanauer can often be found at the team’s Longacres training facility, overseeing operations from his office overlooking the pitch.

About ten days ago, Hanauer and I convened at the training facility to delve into the franchise’s current state. My aim was to glean insights into where he envisions the Sounders within the MLS landscape, preparations for the 2025 Club World Cup, the team’s management of off-field challenges, and his expansive vision for Longacres beyond its training facilities.
