Jonathan Papelbon Slams MLB: Calls Out League Over Chris Martin’s IL Stint with Red Sox

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States, but less than a week into June, Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Chris Martin found himself on the injured list due to anxiety.

Martin joins a growing list of athletes grappling with mental health issues, a trend increasingly acknowledged in Major League Baseball (MLB) and beyond. While MLB has made strides in supporting players’ mental well-being, former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon believes there’s more to be done. He’s urging the league to step up its efforts in addressing mental health challenges among players.

Speaking on NESN’s pregame coverage, Papelbon highlighted the Red Sox’s proactive approach but stressed the need for broader action from MLB. He suggested the implementation of a specific protocol to assist players dealing with mental health struggles, emphasizing its distinction from physical injuries.

Over the past two decades, numerous MLB players have grappled with mental health issues, reflecting a societal shift towards destigmatizing mental health discussions. Red Sox manager Alex Cora, outfielder Jarren Duran, and reliever Kenley Jansen have all shared their personal battles, underscoring the team’s commitment to providing support and resources.

Boston’s chief baseball officer Craig Breslow commended Martin’s courage in addressing his anxiety and reiterated the organization’s full support. With resources like a behavioral health program in place, the Red Sox are dedicated to helping players navigate mental health challenges.

Approaching the Red Sox last weekend, Martin opened up about his struggles with anxiety, citing its impact on his performance. While prioritizing his well-being, the Red Sox intend to provide Martin with the necessary time and support, acknowledging his progress thus far in managing his condition.
