Dismissing the Myth: Great Debunks Origin Latrell Story Amid Alarming Reality for Maroons

Willie Mason, a Canterbury Bulldogs legend, hailed Latrell Mitchell as “the premier left center globally” and advocated for the Rabbitohs’ standout to be considered for an Origin return.

Although Mitchell was overlooked by Blues coach Michael Maguire for Game I, the suspension of Joseph Suaalii and an injury to Kotoni Staggs have significantly boosted Mitchell’s chances of securing a spot for Game II.

When NRL great Gorden Tallis asked about the replacement for Suaalii at left center, Mason promptly endorsed Mitchell, emphasizing his ability to unsettle opposing teams with his remarkable talent.

“He instills fear in opponents,” stated Mason, who represented NSW in 13 matches, on NRL 360. “He possesses that unique X-factor. While he wasn’t considered for Game One due to off-field issues, I don’t believe that’s factual.”

“In the past few weeks, he has truly demonstrated his worth, and I expect him to do so again this week. In my opinion, he remains unrivaled as the premier left center globally. His attacking prowess and imposing presence are unmatched, making him the only player capable of intimidating Queensland.”

Mitchell Pearce, who has 19 NSW appearances to his name, echoed Mason’s sentiments and commended Mitchell’s ability to rise to the occasion on the grandest stages.

“Latrell delivered a stellar performance last week,” Pearce remarked. “He has produced several standout performances despite facing criticism, particularly in a struggling team.”

“When he’s focused and in form, he performs exceptionally well. He has proven himself in Origin matches. As Mason pointed out, he’s an intimidating force due to his size and strength, qualities that we need.”

Despite missing out on Origin appearances in 2022 and 2023 due to injuries, Mitchell’s recent impressive outings, including a try, three try assists, and four linebreak assists against the Titans, have firmly placed him in contention for a NSW recall as the Blues seek to level the 2024 Origin series.
