NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported on June 12 that the Carolina Hurricanes are actively seeking a long-term contract extension for key defenseman Jaccob Slavin.
“Obviously, Carolina has a lot of business to take care of for 2024-25, but word is they are also looking beyond that,” Friedman wrote. “Hearing the Hurricanes are working on a long-term extension for Jaccob Slavin. He is eligible to re-sign on July 1 and is a huge part of what they do.”
Slavin is entering the final season of his seven-year, $37.1 million contract with the Hurricanes and can sign an extension on July 1.
In 2024, Slavin scored 6 goals and 31 assists, totaling 37 points, the second-highest in his career. He led the team in ice time during the playoffs, adding 1 goal and 2 assists in 11 games.
Slavin, a cornerstone of the Hurricanes’ defense since his 2015-16 debut, played 81 games in 2024 with only 8 penalty minutes. He won the 2023–24 Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and ability.
The Hurricanes also announced Eric Tulsky as their new GM on May 24, following Don Waddell’s resignation. Tulsky, with the team since 2014, has a strong background in hockey management and strategy.
Tulsky faces a busy offseason, with key players like Jake Guentzel, Jordan Martinook, Teuvo Teravainen, and Brett Pesce approaching free agency, and restricted free agents Seth Jarvis and Martin Necas needing new contracts.
One of Tulsky’s first major decisions involves making Guentzel’s negotiating rights available in a low-price trade ahead of free agency on July 1. Friedman reported on June 7 that Guentzel’s rights could be traded for a mid-round pick.
