Roosters Pursue Wallabies Winger Nawaqanitawase Amid Injury Woes

Mark Nawaqanitawase

The Sydney Roosters are actively pursuing Wallabies and NSW Waratahs winger Mark Nawaqanitawase to bolster their squad amidst a challenging injury situation. With key centres Michael Jennings and Billy Smith sidelined, the Roosters are keen to secure Nawaqanitawase’s services earlier than planned, leveraging the conclusion of the Super Rugby season.

Nawaqanitawase, set to join the Roosters on a two-year deal from 2025, has requested an early release from his Rugby Australia contract. The 23-year-old is reportedly excluded from Wallabies contention for their upcoming 13-Test schedule, potentially clearing his path to transition to rugby league sooner.

In addition to NRL aspirations, Nawaqanitawase is a candidate for Australia’s rugby sevens squad at the Paris Olympics, adding further intrigue to his potential early departure negotiations with Rugby Australia.

Confirming the ongoing discussions, Nawaqanitawase’s agent Milan Volavola-Shankar affirmed to The Sydney Morning Herald, “At this stage, the Roosters have expressed interest in bringing Mark Nawaqanitawase prior to his contract start date. We are in negotiations with Rugby Australia regarding the possibility of an early release.”

Brandon Smith

Meanwhile, amidst speculation surrounding his future, Roosters star Brandon Smith addressed recent disciplinary issues and dismissed rumors linking him to a move to the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Despite facing scrutiny for missing team obligations, Smith emphasized his commitment to improving and meeting club standards.

The Roosters’ pursuit of Nawaqanitawase underscores their proactive approach to managing depth and strengthening their lineup amid challenges. As discussions unfold, the NRL community awaits developments that could potentially reshape the Roosters’ roster dynamics for the remainder of the season.
