Wilyer Abreu makes a comeback to the Boston Red Sox lineup after recovering from an ankle sprain he sustained on June 2.
The promising young slugger traveled with the team to their series against the Reds at Great American Ballpark and is set to start in his familiar position in right field. Red Sox manager Alex Cora had initially planned for Abreu’s return either on June 21 or 22, opting to give the rookie an extra day of rest on Friday night.
To make room for Abreu on the roster, Boston has optioned Bobby Dalbec to Triple-A. Dalbec has been a versatile presence, filling in at third base for Rafael Devers and at first base for Dominic Smith and Garrett Cooper throughout the season. While Dalbec’s defense has been reliable, his offensive production has not matched expectations, batting just .133/.217/.193 with 43 strikeouts in 37 games with the Red Sox.

Despite Abreu’s absence, the Red Sox have performed admirably offensively, though they faced difficulties against Andrew Abbott and the Reds on June 21, snapping a five-game winning streak with a 14-strikeout, two-run performance.
Abreu’s return is anticipated to bolster the team’s offense significantly. During his rehab assignment with the WooSox, Abreu showcased strong form, hitting .250/.308/.750 with two home runs, while his overall season statistics in the majors stand at .272/.344/.485 with six homers before his injury.
Abreu’s all-around performance has been pivotal for Boston, and his return marks a timely resurgence as he continues to vie for a spot in the All-Star game and remains a top contender for AL Rookie of the Year honors.
