Jarred Kelenic has embraced his role at the top of the Atlanta Braves’ batting order, stepping in for the sidelined Ronald Acuña Jr. In a recent game against the New York Yankees, Kelenic contributed significantly with a home run and two RBIs in a 3-1 victory. Since taking over the leadoff spot, Kelenic boasts an impressive .324 batting average with three home runs and six RBIs across eight games.
“Guys see that as an opportunity and some guys respond to the opportunities they get,” remarked Braves manager Brian Snitker on Kelenic’s performance.
Overall this season, Kelenic, 24, is hitting .270 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs. Initially starting in various lower spots in the batting order, including ninth, eighth, and seventh, Kelenic’s adaptability has been key to his success.
Drafted sixth overall by the Mets in 2018, Kelenic joined the Mariners before being traded to the Braves in December. His versatility has been evident against right-handed pitchers, batting .275 compared to .250 against lefties.
In addition to his offensive contributions, Kelenic has adjusted defensively, moving from left field to center following a teammate’s injury. His adaptability and timely performances have coincided with the Braves’ recent successes, winning eight of their last ten games.
Reflecting on his team’s performance, Kelenic praised pitcher Max Fried’s consistency and acknowledged the Braves’ ongoing quest to maximize their potential.
“It´s a big series,” noted Snitker, emphasizing the team’s progress. “We´re playing more to our capabilities. Quite honestly, I still don´t think we´re hitting on all cylinders.”
