West Coast star Jake Waterman praises young talent Harley Reid for “changing the club” as he readies for his return against Hawthorn on Sunday.
Waterman expressed that Reid has brought hope to senior teammates and fans as the club begins to recover from its lowest point in history. Having served a two-match suspension for a dangerous tackle, coach Adam Simpson confirmed Reid will be back to face the Hawks this weekend.
Waterman, showing enthusiasm over the 19-year-old, mentioned, “It’s hard to contain excitement about him; he’s just so good,” on On The Couch. He highlighted Reid’s impressive performance in his 10 games, including several mark-of-the-year nominees and a remarkable running goal against Melbourne.
“He’s transformed the club by providing hope to players and fans. Every time he touches the ball, there’s a surge of energy from the crowd. Besides being an excellent player, he’s a humble, eager learner,” Waterman added.
Waterman, currently third in the Coleman Medal race, noted Reid’s composed handling of his rapid rise and media attention. “He seems unaffected by it all. Internally, he might feel it, but his demeanor at the club is commendable,” he said.
Reid’s return coincides with Elliot Yeo’s three-year contract extension, seen as vital for Reid’s growth. “Yeo has been mentoring Reid, Elijah Hewett, and Reuben Ginbey, significantly impacting their development,” Waterman remarked.
Reid is set to return this week, aiming to energize the team further.
