Collingwood midfielder-forward Josh Carmichael has been referred to the AFL’s concussion panel due to ongoing symptoms following a recent head injury, according to reports.
Carmichael, who last played for the Magpies’ VFL side in early May against Southport, has been sidelined since then with concussion symptoms that emerged after an incident during the pre-season.
In an update provided by Collingwood on Monday, the club stated that Carmichael, acquired in the 2022 Mid-Season Draft, continues to undergo concussion protocols under the guidance of both club and AFL medical teams.
Sam Edmund of SEN previously reported this month on Carmichael’s uncertain future due to persistent health challenges, confirming that the former West Adelaide player is now under investigation by the AFL’s concussion panel.
The AFL has seen several players retire early due to concussion-related issues, including Carmichael’s teammate Nathan Murphy and Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw.
Carmichael joined Collingwood midway through the 2022 season after an impressive stint in the SANFL, making his AFL debut later that year and contributing to the Magpies’ semi-final victory over Fremantle.
After playing only one game in 2023, Carmichael returned to the VFL, where he appeared in six matches this season before his concussion symptoms resurfaced.
