Red Sox Mull Parting Ways with Key Players for Starting Pitcher at Deadline

Kenley Jansen #74 of the Boston Red Sox

As the Boston Red Sox continue to defy early-season expectations, the team’s remarkable performance over the past month suggests that they will be active buyers at the upcoming trade deadline. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Boston appears poised to bolster their roster for a playoff push.

The Red Sox have dramatically turned their season around, surpassing predictions and igniting hope among their fan base. Adding to the optimism is the impending return of first baseman Triston Casas, who has been sidelined with a rib injury. His return promises to inject further life into a surging lineup.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Red Sox have their sights set on strengthening their starting rotation. According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, Boston might consider parting with either Kenley Jansen or

Chris Martin #55 of the Boston Red Sox

“Jesús Luzardo is on the Injured List and the Miami Marlins’ front office has indicated they are not planning to trade him before the deadline,” Bowden reported. “The Red Sox certainly could pursue other starters, including Garrett Crochet, but the asking price for the majors’ strikeouts leader would have to include top prospects like Kyle Teel, Marcelo Mayer, or Roman Anthony to even start the conversation.”

Bowden further speculated on a potential scenario where the Red Sox could trade Jansen or Martin for a starting pitcher who is an impending free agent. This would require a match with a team that has surplus rotation depth but a need for a closer or set-up reliever.

The Red Sox’s need for another reliable starter is magnified by the season-ending injury to Garrett Whitlock. While the bullpen has held its own, adding a solid arm to the rotation could be the difference-maker in Boston’s pursuit of a postseason berth.

As the trade deadline looms, all eyes will be on the Red Sox front office. With a rejuvenated roster and key players returning from injury, the stage is set for Boston to make significant moves. The coming weeks will reveal whether the Red Sox can capitalize on their momentum and position themselves as serious contenders in the playoff race.
