When the Knicks signed Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency two years ago, he was expected to serve as a backup big man alongside Mitchell Robinson. However, due to Robinson’s frequent injuries, Hartenstein took on a larger role and became a crucial part of the rotation.
Last season, Hartenstein, at 26, earned a spot in the starting lineup for the first time in his six-year NBA career and delivered some of his best performances, contributing significantly to the Knicks’ deep playoff run. He averaged 7.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while shooting 64 percent from the field, setting himself up for a promising offseason.
Although the Knicks tried to retain him, Hartenstein chose to sign a three-year deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder for a better financial opportunity. At his introductory press conference, he reflected on the difficult decision, expressing gratitude for his time in New York and excitement about joining the Thunder’s culture and style of play.
Hartenstein looks forward to working with Coach of the Year Mark Daigneault and playing alongside young star Chet Holmgren. He anticipates a smooth transition and is eager to see how their partnership will enhance their on-court performance.
