Ohio State Buckeyes running back TC Caffey (28)
Ohio State’s running back room, already top-heavy for the 2024 season, faces a new challenge with the recent knee injury to walk-on TC Caffey during offseason workouts. The Buckeyes’ depth at the position is now a concern, especially with Caffey likely to miss the entire season.
At the top of Ohio State’s running back chart are two of college football’s premier talents: TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. Together, they have amassed an impressive 5,470 rushing yards and 63 touchdowns. As dual-threat players, they have also contributed 859 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
Beyond Henderson and Judkins, the Buckeyes’ depth is thin, consisting of two true freshmen, James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon, and the now-injured Caffey. The walk-on’s absence is notable despite his limited playing time. In his Ohio State career, Caffey appeared in just two games in 2022, recording 10 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown, primarily during a blowout victory over Toledo. He did not see any action in the 2023 season.
Typically, losing a walk-on might not generate much concern, but Caffey’s experience—albeit limited—was a crucial aspect of Ohio State’s running back depth. Both freshmen, Peoples and Williams-Dixon, showed promise during the Spring Game, yet their performances came against the team’s deeper depth chart on defense.
Head coach Ryan Day mentioned that Caleb Downs has also been working out with the running backs, but significant contributions from Downs in the backfield would be unexpected. Consequently, the Buckeyes may need to explore options to reinforce their running back room, potentially through the transfer portal, despite the proximity to training camp complicating such moves.
For Ohio State to maintain its high expectations, Peoples and Williams-Dixon will need to mature rapidly. Both freshmen come highly regarded out of high school, and if the Buckeyes perform as anticipated, they should see meaningful playing time this fall. Their development and readiness will be critical as Ohio State aims to navigate the season with a well-rounded and effective running back unit.
