Boston Celtics forward Sam Hauser, renowned for his precision in 3-point shooting, has agreed to a four-year, $45 million contract extension, as confirmed by his agent Jason Glushon to ESPN on Sunday.
Hauser, set to earn $2 million in the 2024-25 season, will remain with the Celtics through the 2028-29 season, contributing to what is projected to be one of the most expensive payrolls in NBA history.
Undrafted from the University of Virginia in 2021, Hauser has thrived as a development success for the Celtics, playing a key role in the team’s rise to championship contention. Last season, he ranked fourth among players with over 400 attempts, shooting 42.4% from beyond the arc. Over his career, he has maintained a 42.2% 3-point shooting accuracy.
This summer, in addition to Hauser, the Celtics extended contracts for All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum (five years, $315 million) and guard Derrick White (four years, $125 million).
Hauser’s new deal raises the Celtics’ 2025-26 payroll to a projected $225 million, with an additional $210 million in luxury tax penalties. The team is expected to exceed the league’s second apron for the second year in a row, rendering their 2032 and 2033 first-round picks untradable.
With this extension, the Celtics’ total salary and luxury tax are projected to be the highest in NBA history, surpassing the Phoenix Suns’ current $432 million bill.
Hauser, 26, made 179 catch-and-shoot 3-pointers last season, the sixth most in the NBA. He also became the third player in Celtics history to make 10 three-pointers in a single game, joining Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart.
