Report: Maple Leafs Poised for a Reunion With Former Craig Berube Winger

As most NHL free agents have found new homes, the Toronto Maple Leafs are searching deep into the market to add a player with potential talent. NHL analyst Mike Augello of Hockey Buzz recently highlighted forward Sammy Blais as a potential target for the Leafs.

In a July 21 post, Augello noted Blais’ connection with Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube, who coached him during the St. Louis Blues’ 2019 Stanley Cup-winning campaign.

“Sammy Blais played for Berube with the Blues on the 2019 Cup winner as a fourth-line role player,” Augello wrote. “Only 28, the 6’2”, 206 lb. winger is all sandpaper and not much skill.”

Despite not being the flashiest player, Blais could add some grit and depth to the Leafs’ forward corps. With the current injuries in the Toronto roster, including the loss of Isaiah Hartenstein to Oklahoma City and the uncertainty surrounding free agent Precious Achiuwa, Blais could fill a valuable role.

Blais, still young at 28, has the potential to contribute effectively, especially coming at a cheaper price this late in the offseason. His stint with the New York Rangers from July 2021 to February 2023 and his return to the Blues have shown he can be a reliable bottom-six forward.

Augello points to the Maple Leafs’ history of signing players late in the offseason, suggesting Blais could join the team via a tryout. Last September, the Leafs signed former San Jose Shark Noah Gregor through a professional tryout, resulting in Gregor earning a roster spot.

Other analysts have also mentioned Blais as a potential addition for the Maple Leafs. Bennett Jull of The Leafs Nation described Blais as an “honorable mention” among free agents who could be a valuable signing for Toronto. Jull highlighted the importance of getting budget signings right in a salary cap league.

Jon Steitzer, also from The Leafs Nation, examined Berube’s line usage with the Blues and noted Blais’ role in the third forward line alongside Jakub Vrana and Kevin Hayes. This suggests Blais could slot into a similar role for the Maple Leafs, providing depth and experience.

With Craig Berube now at the helm, the Maple Leafs are looking to build a championship team. Berube was announced as the new head coach on May 17, becoming the 32nd head coach in franchise history. The Leafs are hoping to end their championship drought with Berube’s leadership.

As the offseason progresses, the Maple Leafs are navigating various rumors and signings, including the acquisition of superstar defenseman Chris Tanev and the ongoing Mitch Marner situation. Adding a player like Sammy Blais could be another step toward strengthening the roster for the upcoming season.
