New York Knicks Eye Jalen Duren: Could He Be the Perfect Solution to the Center Void Left by Isaiah Hartenstein’s Departure?

The New York Knicks are actively pursuing additional depth at the center position following the departure of Isaiah Hartenstein. Currently, the team has Jericho Sims and Ariel Hukporti as potential backups to starting center Mitchell Robinson. However, these options may not be sufficient for the Knicks’ aspirations. A recent trade proposal by Sean Deveney of Heavy suggests that the Knicks could acquire Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren, addressing their need for a strong presence in the paint.

The proposed trade includes the Knicks sending guard Miles McBride and two first-round draft picks to the Pistons in exchange for Duren. McBride has been involved in trade discussions as the Knicks possess considerable depth in the guard position, with players like Tyler Kolek and Cameron Payne also available off the bench. McBride’s emergence last season, following Immanuel Quickley’s trade to the Toronto Raptors in the OG Anunoby deal, has made him a valuable trade asset.

Jalen Duren, only 20 years old, is already recognized as one of the NBA’s most promising young rebounders. In the 2024 season, he averaged 13.8 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, showcasing significant growth in his second year with the Pistons. Duren’s rebounding prowess and overall potential make him an attractive option for the Knicks, who could benefit from his development under head coach Tom Thibodeau. Thibodeau has a track record of developing centers, which could bode well for Duren’s future.

Interestingly, the Knicks are familiar with Duren’s potential. On the 2022 draft night, his rights were initially traded from the Charlotte Hornets to the Knicks, who then sent them to the Pistons. Now, two years later, the Knicks are revisiting the possibility of bringing Duren to New York.

Adding Duren to the roster would provide the Knicks with a solid option at the center position, bolstering their big-man rotation and potentially filling the void left by Hartenstein’s departure. As the Knicks continue to explore all their options ahead of the 2024-2025 NBA season, they are focused on maximizing their roster’s potential to remain competitive. The acquisition of Duren could be a key move in solidifying their frontcourt and enhancing their chances for success in the upcoming season.
