Tarik Skubal

As the MLB trade deadline approaches on July 30th at 6:00 p.m. ET, the flurry of activity has started to pick up, but significant trades remain on the horizon. With the Detroit Tigers actively in the rumor mill and the market heating up, let’s take a closer look at the key players potentially on the move and what to expect in the coming days.

Tigers’ Trade Landscape

The trade market has already seen some action with the Miami Marlins shipping A.J. Puk to the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Rays dealing Randy Arozarena for prospects. The Chicago White Sox’s Garrett Crochet, another player generating buzz, could be on the move if a team is willing to meet his demands for a contract extension. However, as teams weigh their options, it’s clear that the Tigers are in a pivotal position to make some impactful decisions.

Tarik Skubal: A Potential Blockbuster?

Detroit’s ace, Tarik Skubal, remains a sought-after target, but a trade seems unlikely. The Tigers’ front office, led by Scott Harris, would need a substantial package to part with their star pitcher. Only the Baltimore Orioles seem to have the kind of high-caliber prospects that could tempt Detroit. While Skubal’s trade value is high, the risk of moving him for less than what the team believes he’s worth could be a major deterrent. Unless an extraordinary offer emerges, Skubal is expected to stay put.

Jack Flaherty: The Likely Departure

Jack Flaherty, having revitalized his career with Detroit, is more likely to be dealt. His impressive 2.95 ERA and excellent strikeout-to-walk ratio make him a prime rental candidate. With Flaherty’s past injury issues and his impending free agency, trading him now could yield a solid return in prospects. Teams like the Orioles, Astros, Dodgers, Yankees, and even division rivals such as the Guardians and Twins, could be in the mix for his services. The Tigers should aim to secure a back-end top 100 prospect or better for Flaherty.

Carson Kelly: An Asset on the Move?

Carson Kelly, the veteran catcher, has had a standout season in Detroit. However, with Dillon Dingler emerging and Kelly’s contract expiring, a trade seems imminent. The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros are potential destinations for Kelly, given their need for catching depth. His value might be bolstered if paired with Flaherty in a trade, but Kelly’s likely departure is a matter of when, not if.

Mark Canha and Gio Urshela: Lower-Profile Moves

Veteran outfielder Mark Canha and infielder Gio Urshela could also be on the move, albeit with less fanfare. Canha’s offensive production has cooled, and while his $11M team option might limit interest, a team willing to absorb his salary could acquire him for a minimal return. Urshela, acquired cheaply, has provided valuable versatility but may be moved to clear space for Jace Jung. Both players could fetch modest returns if any teams show interest.

Akil Baddoo: A Potential Change of Scenery?

Akil Baddoo, once a promising Rule 5 pick, might be moved as the Tigers look to open spots for emerging talent. Baddoo’s inconsistent performance and the emergence of other center field options make him expendable. If the Tigers can find a team willing to take a chance on him, they might receive a minor prospect in return.

Relievers: Limited Appeal

The Tigers’ bullpen, though solid, doesn’t feature a dominant closer. While Andrew Chafin and Tyler Holton offer value as left-handed options, their trade value might not be high. The Tigers are better off retaining their relievers unless an overpay offer comes through. Improving the bullpen remains a priority for Detroit, but moving these arms might not significantly aid that effort.

Final Thoughts

With just over 73 hours remaining before the deadline, the Tigers have several decisions to make. The focus will likely center on trading Jack Flaherty and Carson Kelly, with other pieces potentially moving if the right offers come in. As the clock ticks down, expect Scott Harris and GM Jeff Greenberg to explore every avenue to bolster the team’s future.

The next few days will be crucial for the Tigers as they navigate the trade deadline. Stay tuned as the drama unfolds and the final moves are made.
