The Chicago Cubs have endured a challenging 2024 MLB season, struggling to find their stride and facing the grim reality of likely missing out on the playoffs. Despite the current season’s disappointment, there’s a silver lining on the horizon. With the right moves in the upcoming offseason, the Cubs could set themselves up for a strong run in 2025.

Jed Hoyer, the Cubs’ president of baseball operations, has made notable strides in building a competitive roster. The Cubs’ investment in Shota Imanaga and the return of Cody Bellinger last offseason were steps in the right direction. However, for the Cubs to transition from hopefuls to serious contenders, an aggressive approach this offseason is crucial.

Patrick Mooney of The Athletic has proposed that Chicago should prioritize the starting pitching market. One standout name to consider is Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles. Corbin Burnes, currently having an impressive season with a 2.47 ERA and an 11-4 record in 22 starts, represents the kind of elite talent that could elevate the Cubs’ rotation to elite status.

Corbin Burnes’ addition would be transformative. With his solid performance metrics—1.04 WHIP, a 3.9 K/BB ratio, and 138.2 innings pitched—he would bolster a rotation already featuring promising arms like Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga. Pairing Corbin Burnes with Steele, Imanaga, and Jameson Taillon could create a formidable rotation, with potential young talents like Ben Brown or Jordan Wicks rounding out the staff.

However, pitching isn’t the Cubs’ only area of concern. The team has struggled with offensive consistency throughout the season. Although the acquisition of All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes was a step toward addressing this need, the Cubs would benefit from additional offensive firepower. Exploring options such as Pete Alonso in free agency or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. via trade could significantly enhance their lineup.

The potential pursuit of Corbin Burnes would be a game-changer for Chicago. His presence would not only stabilize the rotation but also signal the Cubs’ intent to contend seriously in the near future. As the Cubs look toward a pivotal offseason, combining aggressive moves in both pitching and offense could transform their fortunes and make the 2025 season one to remember.
