The New York Knicks and star forward Julius Randle are now positioned to sign a $181.5 million extension. The Knicks have already addressed their deal with Jalen Brunson, offering him a new four-year contract to avoid waiting for his free agency next year, after he was expected to opt out of his current deal.
As it stands, Randle is entering the final year of his four-year, $117 million contract. He has a player option for the 2025–26 season, worth $30.9 million, when he will be 31.
Despite his strong performance in recent seasons, Randle is recovering from shoulder surgery, which might make the Knicks hesitant to commit $45.2 million per year. Randle, who averaged 24 points, 9.2 rebounds, and five assists per game last season, earning his third All-Star appearance in just 46 games, will likely command a significant contract on the free-agent market. However, given his recent injury, the Knicks might prefer to hold off on a big extension until they see how he performs post-surgery.
The Knicks’ front office may choose to be cautious and wait, especially with other talented players set to become available in free agency in 2025. Extending Randle now could mean replacing the final year of his current deal with a new contract, potentially adding $15 million to their salary cap.
Randle’s recent inconsistencies and defensive issues have raised concerns. Nevertheless, he remains an elite rebounder and a strong scorer around the basket. With the addition of Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby, who provide excellent three-point shooting, the Knicks might adjust Randle’s role to focus less on perimeter shooting this season.
