Orlando City and USMNT Star Duncan McGuire Ends Transfer Saga with Major New Deal and Pay Raise

In a significant development for Orlando City SC, rising striker Duncan McGuire is poised to commit to the club with a long-term deal, ending months of speculation about his future. The 23-year-old forward has reportedly agreed to an extension through 2027, with an option for 2028, pending league approval, sources confirmed to GOAL.

The news marks a dramatic shift after McGuire’s potential move to Blackburn Rovers in England’s Championship fell through earlier this year. The transfer was derailed due to an administrative error, as Blackburn reportedly made a mistake during the processing of his paperwork. Consequently, McGuire returned to Orlando City, which had already signed Luis Muriel in anticipation of his departure.

Despite the setback, McGuire has been instrumental for Orlando City this season, scoring seven goals in 17 starts. His impressive performance, including a total of 20 league goals since being drafted No. 6 in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, has earned him a substantial pay raise under the new contract. While his current salary stands at $99,716, the new deal will see him earn designated player-level money, although Orlando City may choose to buy down the deal to avoid DP classification.

Orlando City’s decision to secure McGuire reflects their determination to retain key players amidst a challenging season. The team, currently sitting seventh in the MLS Eastern Conference, has struggled with consistency and injuries, particularly with Muriel’s underwhelming performance, having scored just three goals in 24 matches.

McGuire’s new contract also reinforces his critical role in the squad. His resilience and skill have made him a central figure in the team’s attack, particularly as the club navigates the complexities of the MLS and European transfer windows.

Additionally, McGuire’s contributions extend beyond the MLS. He was part of the U.S. Olympic team this summer and earned his first senior national team cap in January, further underscoring his growing prominence in American soccer.

As Orlando City prepares to resume MLS play on August 24 against Sporting Kansas City, McGuire’s return to the squad and new contract are expected to provide a significant boost. The deal ensures that Orlando City retains one of its brightest young talents, securing both the present and future of their attacking lineup.
