Mets’ Blow: Trade Acquisition Demoted to Triple-A

The New York Mets were highly active during this year’s trade deadline, bolstering their bullpen to address the team’s biggest weakness. However, the bullpen’s configuration on deadline day was always intended to be temporary, as several key relievers remained on the injured list.

Now, with Dedniel Núñez returning from the injured list, the Mets needed to make room in the bullpen. As a result, they decided to option a recently acquired relief pitcher to Triple-A Syracuse.

The Mets have sent Huascar Brazobán down to Triple-A Syracuse.

As reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Mets have optioned relief pitcher Huascar Brazobán to Triple-A Syracuse.

Brazobán joined the Mets on deadline day as part of the Miami Marlins’ firesale, in exchange for minor-league infielder Wilfredo Lara. The 34-year-old had an impressive run with the Marlins in 2024, pitching 30.2 innings over 20 appearances with a 2.93 ERA, a 1.011 WHIP, 34 strikeouts, and a 150 ERA+.

However, Brazobán struggled to maintain that success in Queens, managing only 10 innings across nine appearances with a 6.30 ERA, a 1.600 WHIP, seven walks, and 10 strikeouts. His ERA+ also plummeted to 64 during his time with the Mets.

Why did the Mets choose to option Brazobán instead of Adam Ottavino?

Optioning Brazobán instead of designating Adam Ottavino for assignment may surprise some Mets fans, but it makes sense for several reasons.

Firstly, Brazobán’s recent struggles are a factor. Additionally, after throwing 34 pitches in Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres, he’s likely unavailable for the next few games, which would leave the Mets with a short bullpen.

Sending Brazobán to Triple-A also gives him a chance to rebuild his confidence and allows the Mets to retain both pitchers on their roster. Despite his recent difficulties, Brazobán is expected to be the first player called up if the bullpen faces injuries or other issues.
