Heartbreaking Decision: Kansas Jayhawks Part Ways with Edge Rusher

Kansas football faces challenges on the defensive line after losing Austin Booker to the NFL in the offseason. While the roster includes several edge rushers with significant potential, none have yet proven themselves at the collegiate level. To bolster the line, the coaching staff successfully secured commitments from 4-star recruits Deshawn “DJ” Warner and Dak Brinkley.

One player who arrived at KU with high expectations was Tony Terry, a former 3-star prospect from Missouri. After redshirting his first year in Lawrence and not taking any snaps, Terry was anticipated to eventually contribute in the trenches for Lance Leipold’s team. However, during a recent practice, the Jayhawks’ head coach confirmed that Terry is no longer with the program.

Last Monday, Kansas head coach Lance Leipold confirmed to reporters at the conclusion of his press conference that Tony Terry is “no longer in the program.” His absence from the final fall camp roster had already sparked questions from the media.

Terry, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound defensive end, was the 10th highest-rated recruit among KU’s Class of 2024 signees. Known for his versatility, Terry reportedly added 20 pounds during the offseason to transition to defensive tackle.

In high school, Terry’s athleticism extended beyond the defensive line; he also excelled as a tight end. Former offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki even suggested he might see reps at that position, though Terry never played a game for Kansas.

While Terry’s departure may seem surprising, it likely won’t have a significant long-term impact on the Jayhawks. With Leipold’s recent emphasis on recruiting edge rushers, Terry may have found it difficult to secure a spot in the rotation. It remains unclear whether he plans to enter the transfer portal or retire from college football altogether.
