Red Sox place infielder on 10-day injured list with finger issue.

The Boston Red Sox have placed infielder David Hamilton on the 10-day injured list following a fracture to his left index finger, which occurred during a bunt attempt in Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Hamilton’s injury is a significant blow to the Red Sox, as he has been a key contributor to the team this season.

Hamilton, 26, has been performing well for the Red Sox, boasting a .248 batting average along with 17 doubles, eight home runs, and 28 RBIs over 98 games. His speed has been a notable asset, as he entered Thursday ranked second in the American League and fifth in the majors with 33 stolen bases. In his 113 career games with Boston, Hamilton has accumulated a .235 average, eight homers, 28 RBIs, and 35 stolen bases.

To fill Hamilton’s spot on the roster, the Red Sox recalled infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester. Sogard, also 26, made his major league debut with the Red Sox earlier this season, where he hit .227 with six RBIs in 12 games. In Triple-A, Sogard has been more productive, hitting .283 with 13 home runs and 59 RBIs across 96 games this year. His versatility as a switch-hitter and ability to play multiple positions will be valuable as the team adjusts to Hamilton’s absence.

In addition to the moves involving Hamilton and Sogard, the Red Sox infielder have also made adjustments to their pitching staff. Left-handed reliever Cam Booser has been sent to Worcester for a rehab assignment, indicating that he is on the path to returning to the major league roster soon. Additionally, right-handed reliever Brad Keller has been outrighted to Worcester, a move that will likely impact the bullpen depth.

Hamilton’s injury is a setback for the Red Sox infielder especially given his contributions both offensively and defensively. The team will need to rely on Sogard’s versatility and the efforts of other players to fill the void left by Hamilton’s absence. As the season progresses, the Red Sox will be closely monitoring Hamilton’s recovery and the performance of their roster adjustments to stay competitive.
