New Year’s resolutions for the Blazers to set in 2024

Here are some things Portland ought to do in the upcoming year.

The Portland Trail Blazers concluded 2023 with a 9-22 record, successfully achieving many early-season goals for a rebuilding team. They provided substantial playing time to their young players, maximized lottery odds, and maintained competitiveness in several losses. However, as they enter 2024, certain aspects need improvement. Here are some New Year’s resolutions for the Blazers:

1. Defend the Paint:
Addressing the issue of points in the paint is crucial. The Blazers, currently ranked 28th in the NBA, allow over 57 points in the paint per game. While aiming for the league’s top defenses might be ambitious, setting a goal of limiting opponents to around 45 points in the paint per night is realistic and beneficial.

2. Utilize Scoot Henderson:
Rookie Scoot Henderson has displayed significant potential in the last 10 games, averaging 15.8 points, 5.5 assists, and shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc. Despite a crowded guard rotation, finding ways to maximize Henderson’s contributions and development should be a priority. This may involve considering trade options for surplus guards, like Malcolm Brogdon, to create space for Henderson’s growth.

3. Develop Bench Synergy:
The Blazers have witnessed positive results from various bench lineups recently, emphasizing the importance of bench synergy. Coach Chauncey Billups has had to adjust lineups due to injuries and foul trouble, leading to success with certain bench combinations. Ensuring that the team remains defensively oriented and cohesive when relying on the bench will be crucial in supporting the young starting lineup during inconsistent phases.

By committing to these resolutions, the Blazers could see significant progress in 2024, offering glimpses of their potential in the near future.
