Reports: Phillies lose Key pitcher.

The Philadelphia Phillies have had few significant issues this season, which is why they find themselves in their current position. However, relying on Taijuan Walker every five games has been problematic. If the Phillies decide to give him starts or put him in crucial postseason situations, it could lead to losses.

When they signed Walker, the expectation was that he would perform as he had earlier in his career—he was an All-Star two years prior and had a 3.49 ERA the season before joining Philadelphia. Unfortunately, things have not gone well for him, particularly in 2024, as he currently has a 6.91 ERA and only 57 strikeouts in 82 innings.

Releasing him might be the best option, but his four-year, $72 million contract, which lasts until the 2027 offseason, complicates matters. The Phillies have shown they’re willing to spend, so they might consider parting ways with him in the offseason and looking for a replacement.

One potential target could be right-hander Shane Bieber. Despite the risk associated with his recent Tommy John surgery, he could provide significant upside if he recovers well. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report ranked him as the No. 25 free agent this winter, suggesting he might secure a back-loaded two-year contract.

After experiencing a drop in velocity in 2023, Bieber started strong in spring training and had two excellent outings before his elbow issue led to surgery on April 12. He might be a candidate for a qualifying offer or a contract that allows him time to regain his value. Although Bieber has had injury concerns, the prospect of adding a pitcher who posted a 2.88 ERA in 2022 is appealing.

Over his seven-year career, he boasts a 3.22 ERA, 3.09 FIP, and 958 strikeouts in 843 innings. If he returns to form, he could be a valuable addition for the Phillies at the right price.
