In the world of professional basketball, it’s all about opportunity. For Xavier Tillman Sr., last season’s journey with the Boston Celtics was a lesson in patience and perseverance. Acquired at the trade deadline from the Memphis Grizzlies, Tillman found himself in the shadows of a star-studded lineup that included the likes of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. As a result, his role was significantly reduced, leading to averages of just four points and 2.7 rebounds over 20 regular-season games.

Tillman primarily saw action during garbage time as the Celtics embarked on their postseason run to the Larry O’Brien Trophy. However, a glimmer of his potential shone through in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, where he stepped up to fill the void left by an injured Kristaps Porzingis. That moment may have marked the turning point for Tillman in Boston, as he displayed his capability to contribute on the biggest stage.

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla acknowledged Tillman’s seamless transition to the team, praising his basketball IQ and adaptability. “I thought it was a great transition after the trade,” Mazzulla said. “He’s really smart, and he picked up on stuff right away. It feels like now he’s been here for a long time, and he’s great at asking questions. He’ll be integral to what we do.”

With the Celtics gearing up for a new season, Tillman is poised for a more significant role. He opted to stay in Boston, signing a modest two-year, $4.8 million deal, possibly seeing the potential for increased playing time. This could be crucial, especially with Porzingis recovering from a “rare” ankle injury and the team aiming to manage the workload of 38-year-old Al Horford.

The Celtics’ depth at center presents an opportunity for Tillman to carve out a niche alongside fellow backups Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta. Known for his defensive versatility, Tillman’s ability to guard multiple positions could be a valuable asset for Boston. “On the court, he’s a guy that’s able to defend pretty well, can defend out on the perimeter, and has good instincts,” Horford noted. “Off the court, he’s blended right in with our group. He’s super easygoing. It’s just nice to have him around.”

With the Celtics preparing for their preseason games against the Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi, the stage is set for Tillman to prove he can seize this moment. The 25-year-old’s mindset aligns perfectly with the team’s aspirations; he’s committed to winning and ready to do what it takes to contribute. If he can capitalize on the opportunities presented to him this season, there’s no telling how far Tillman can take his game—and the Celtics—with him.

As the new season approaches, fans will be eager to see if Tillman can transform from a role player to a pivotal piece in Boston’s championship pursuit. The potential is there, and now it’s time for him to step into the spotlight.
