Former NBA All-Star Rajon Rondo will join the Bucks as a guest coach for training camp, and his role could extend throughout the season in an unofficial capacity. Rivers hinted at Rondo’s involvement, saying, “You’ll see him a lot. That’s all I’ll say.”
Rondo, known for his high basketball IQ, has been eyeing a transition into coaching. While many speculated he would join his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, that opportunity never materialized. Now, the former point guard will have a chance to show his coaching chops with the Bucks.
“There’s a lot of factors that go into coaching,” Rondo explained. “You can’t just say, ‘I’m going to be a coach,’ and everything falls into place. Certain personalities have to mesh, there’s a lot of sacrifice, and it’s a demanding job. I’m learning more about the hours spent watching film and morning meetings — it’s a lot.”
For Rondo, this stint in Milwaukee represents a significant step in his potential coaching journey. While it might not be an official role just yet, he plans to soak in as much knowledge as possible to prepare for a future in coaching.
“You see people go from not coaching to head-coaching jobs all the time,” he added. “Some jump right into assistant coaching. There’s no set path. I just want to gather as much information as I can.”
Rondo’s basketball IQ is legendary, and his presence could be a valuable asset to the Bucks’ roster. Known as one of the smartest players of his era, his insights could offer a unique perspective to the players and coaching staff alike.
“He’s the smartest player I’ve ever coached — and not just smart,” Rivers told ESPN. “He knows when to and when not to speak up. He’s a great team builder. It’s just fun and great to have him around.”
If Rondo can make a positive impact in this unofficial role with the Bucks, it could open doors for him to step into an official coaching role in the future. For now, Milwaukee benefits from the mind of one of the game’s greats as they prepare for a promising 2024-25 season.
