The Boston Bruins and their starting goalie Jeremy Swayman spent the summer embroiled in a contentious contract negotiation as they sought to finalize a long-term deal. They reached an agreement on Sunday morning, just days before the season begins.
The new contract is an eight-year deal worth $8.25 million per season, positioning Swayman among the highest-paid goalies in the NHL. His salary cap hit now ranks fifth in the league, behind only semi-retired Carey Price, Sergei Bobrovsky, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Connor Hellebuyck.
Signing Jeremy Swayman was crucial for the Bruins, as he is expected to be a key player this season. For the past two years, he shared goaltending duties evenly with Linus Ullmark, forming the league’s top goaltending duo. Their consistent performance allowed the team to mask several roster weaknesses.
With Ullmark traded to the Ottawa Senators this offseason to create salary-cap flexibility, Swayman is set to become the full-time starter. However, contract talks soured last week when Bruins management disclosed a “$64M” figure to the media. Swayman’s camp countered that they had not received an offer at that level and needed time to reassess their options.
Ultimately, an agreement was reached for Swayman to receive $66 million over eight years. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Swayman has maintained a .916 save percentage, ranking sixth among the 65 goalies who have played at least 50 games in that span.
