The Cleveland Cavaliers suffered an early setback in their preseason opener as small forward Max Strus exited the game due to injury. Strus, a vital piece of the Cavs’ starting lineup heading into the season, sustained a right hip contusion during the first half of their 116-112 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night.

The injury occurred early in the second quarter when Strus tried to take a charge in transition, landing hard on his side. After being whistled for a foul on the play, Strus remained on the floor for a few moments before walking gingerly to the bench, clutching his hip. Following a brief discussion with the team’s training staff, Strus headed to the locker room for further evaluation and did not return to the game.

In the nine minutes he was on the court, Strus grabbed two rebounds and dished out one assist but did not attempt a shot. His absence left the Cavs to adjust, with sharpshooter Sam Merrill stepping into the rotation to help fill the void.

The Cavs are set to face the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night in their second preseason contest, though Strus’ status for the game remains uncertain. The team will likely provide an update as they prepare for the next exhibition matchup, hoping their new addition can quickly return to the court. Strus is expected to be a key contributor this season, bringing his shooting prowess and defensive tenacity to Cleveland’s lineup.
