The Chicago Cubs are already hard at work evaluating how they can transform their roster into a serious contender in 2025. After falling just one game short of a playoff spot in 2024, it’s clear that certain areas need an overhaul — especially the bullpen and adding more power to the lineup.

The Cubs’ bullpen woes were a major reason for their near-miss in 2024, as they struggled to close out games, often leading to blown leads and missed opportunities early in the season. This issue, coupled with a lack of power at Wrigley Field, highlighted two key areas where the front office will need to focus its efforts this offseason.

One glaring weakness has been the Cubs’ inability to consistently hit for power at home. Despite Wrigley Field’s reputation for favoring hitters when the wind blows out, the Cubs posted a .368 slugging percentage at home, compared to a more robust .415 on the road. Finding a true slugger to add to the lineup has become a priority.

Much of what the Cubs do in the coming months hinges on Cody Bellinger’s decision to opt into his contract. If Bellinger stays, the outfield would remain strong, with Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ, and Seiya Suzuki providing solid support. However, even with Bellinger, there’s a clear need for more power to elevate the Cubs’ offensive production.

One intriguing name that has surfaced is Baltimore Orioles slugger Anthony Santander. Coming off a career year where he hit .235/.308/.506 with 44 home runs and 102 RBI, Santander would bring a serious power threat to the Cubs’ lineup. But beyond his bat, Santander’s leadership qualities make him an appealing target for Chicago, especially as the Cubs anticipate the arrival of their own star prospects.

Santander’s ability to mentor young players, a role he embraced in Baltimore, could be invaluable as the Cubs’ farm system continues to churn out future stars. Bringing in a player of his caliber would not only address the power void but also provide a steady veteran presence in the clubhouse.

However, signing Santander won’t come cheap. Coming off the best season of his career, he’ll command a hefty contract. If Bellinger decides to leave in free agency, though, Santander should be at the top of the Cubs’ target list.

The Cubs’ offseason moves could make or break their 2025 aspirations, and adding a slugger like Santander might just be the missing piece to propel them back into contention.
