The Boston Red Sox finished the 2024 season with an 81-81 record, marking their third consecutive year without a winning record. As they aim to contend for a playoff spot in 2025, President of Baseball Operations Craig Breslow is expected to make bold moves this offseason. One of those moves could involve signing two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell in free agency.
Breslow acknowledged the need for a top-tier pitcher, emphasizing that every team benefits from having a reliable ace, especially when it comes to winning crucial games, including in the postseason. While players like Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, and Kutter Crawford made progress in 2024, Breslow knows the team needs to improve and is open to any opportunity to upgrade the roster.
While other potential aces such as Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, and Jack Flaherty have been mentioned, Snell has now become a viable target after opting out of his two-year, $62 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer predicts the Red Sox could sign Snell to a four-year, $140 million contract.
Despite a slow start and an injury setback in 2024, Snell posted a solid 3.12 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 145 strikeouts in 104 innings for San Francisco. Over the past three seasons, he’s accumulated a 2.82 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and 550 strikeouts in 412 innings. With his experience in the American League East during his time with the Tampa Bay Rays, Snell would be a natural fit in Boston’s rotation.
