Alex Verdugo

The New York Yankees are facing a period of significant change this offseason. After the loss of Juan Soto, fans and analysts alike are wondering what the next steps will be for a team in search of an offensive spark. While nothing should be ruled out entirely, one possibility that doesn’t seem to make much sense is a reunion with veteran outfielder Alex Verdugo.

Verdugo, traded to the Yankees last offseason, arrived with high expectations. Yet, after a season that didn’t meet those expectations, it now seems likely the Yankees will allow him to walk in free agency rather than bringing him back for another year.

The Yankees’ Offseason Decisions

Verdugo’s time with the Yankees was less than stellar. The club hoped his left-handed bat would provide a much-needed offensive boost, but his production was well below what was expected. He finished the 2024 season hitting just .233 with 13 home runs and an 83 OPS+, well below his career average of .272/.328/.414. His struggles at the plate leave little room for a potential long-term role with the Yankees.

While his struggles with the bat are a big factor in the Yankees’ decision to move on, there are other reasons the team may choose not to re-sign him. One of the most significant reasons? The Yankees have blocked the development of one of their top prospects, Jasson Dominguez. Dominguez, one of the most highly touted outfield prospects in the organization, has long been seen as a potential everyday player in the major leagues. Yet, with Verdugo occupying a spot in the outfield, Dominguez has found himself without a consistent role.

By moving on from Verdugo, the Yankees would finally be able to give Dominguez the playing time he deserves, helping the team focus on its future rather than holding on to a short-term solution.

Verdugo’s Decline and the Yankees’ Changing Needs

Max Goodman of NJ.com pointed out that had Verdugo delivered a stronger offensive season, the narrative surrounding his future with the Yankees would likely have been different. In that scenario, Verdugo could have solidified himself as a long-term fit for the team. However, after a down year, he’s now viewed as a “backup plan at best” this winter.

The Yankees, now focused on reshaping their roster, will likely look to free agency and the trade market for other options. The opportunity to develop Dominguez and explore other alternatives leaves Verdugo without a clear path back to the Bronx.

Verdugo’s Time in New York: A Personal Note

Despite the disappointing season on the field, Verdugo had a positive experience with the Yankees. In an emotional reflection, Verdugo expressed that his time with New York was one of the best he’s ever had in terms of team chemistry and camaraderie. “I know it wasn’t my best personal year in offense,” Verdugo said. “We kind of grinded through some things. But as far as teammates and being with the guys, it’s been my favorite team I’ve ever played for.”

Verdugo’s words show that, while things didn’t go as planned on the field, his experience in New York was meaningful. However, the Yankees’ front office will be focused on making decisions that benefit the team’s long-term goals, and a Verdugo reunion doesn’t align with that vision.

The Future for Verdugo: A Fresh Start Elsewhere?

While Verdugo’s stint with the Yankees may come to an end, there’s still potential for him to rediscover his form with another team. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently suggested that Verdugo could be a strong fit for the Chicago White Sox, who are looking to rebuild their roster after a tough season. A two-year, $26 million deal with the White Sox could provide Verdugo with a fresh opportunity to regain his value and potentially become a trade piece for Chicago later in the season.

For Verdugo, a fresh start could be just what he needs to get back to his productive ways. As a 28-year-old with a solid career track record, he’s still young enough to turn things around, especially if he’s given regular playing time and a change of scenery.

Conclusion

It’s clear that Alex Verdugo ’s time with the New York Yankees is likely coming to a close. His struggles at the plate, combined with the Yankees’ need to prioritize the development of young talent like Jasson Dominguez, make a reunion unlikely. While it’s disappointing that things didn’t work out in New York, Verdugo’s career is far from over. Whether he moves on to a team like the White Sox or elsewhere, he still has the potential to return to form and make an impact in Major League Baseball.

For the Yankees, it’s time to turn the page and focus on the future, even if that means saying goodbye to a well-liked but ultimately underperforming player.
