On Monday, the San Jose Earthquakes acquired defender Dave Romney and midfielders Mark-Anthony Kaye and Ian Harkes from the New England Revolution in exchange for $500,000 in general allocation money (GAM) and an international roster slot.

The Earthquakes, who had a league-worst 21 points in 34 games last season, are beginning a new chapter under Bruce Arena, their new coach and sporting director. Arena, who previously coached New England, brought in three players he knows well. The GAM San Jose traded will be spread across the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Why Toronto FC's acquisition of Mark-Anthony Kaye is crucial to rebuild

“We’re pleased to add three quality players to our roster,” Arena said in a statement. “Dave is an experienced defender, while Ian and Mark-Anthony will offer versatility and valuable experience in our midfield.”

Romney, 31, joins his fourth MLS team after stints with the Los Angeles Galaxy (2015-19), Nashville SC (2020-22), and New England. He didn’t score or assist in 27 appearances (24 starts) last year but has eight goals and 14 assists in 232 MLS games (213 starts) over his career.

Kaye, 30, endured a challenging season, failing to score in 21 matches (15 starts). Now on his fifth MLS team, Kaye has 15 goals and 26 assists in 169 career appearances (153 starts) with Los Angeles FC (2018-21), Colorado Rapids (2021-22), Toronto FC (2022-23), and the Revolution (2023-24).

Harkes, 29, recorded one goal and four assists in 27 appearances (17 starts) for New England in 2024. The English midfielder also played for Dundee United in Scotland from 2019-23 and has five goals and six assists in 69 MLS games (50 starts) with D.C. United (2017-18) and New England.
