The New York Mets have bolstered their starting rotation by re-signing left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea to a three-year, $75 million deal, according to Jon Heyman. Pending a physical, the 32-year-old Manaea will return to Queens for the 2025 season, bringing stability and experience to a rotation aiming to contend.

Manaea’s Resurgence with the Mets

Manaea opted out of his previous contract to test free agency but found his way back to the Mets, where he enjoyed a career season in 2024. The veteran southpaw posted a 3.47 ERA during the regular season and contributed in the postseason as the Mets reached the NLCS. Despite some struggles in October, his impact was undeniable, both on the mound and in the clubhouse.

His return was not guaranteed, with some questioning whether the Mets would commit to a 33-year-old pitcher. However, the team chose to prioritize his consistency and leadership. Manaea himself highlighted these qualities in a recent interview on MLB Network’s MLB Tonight.

“Knock on wood, I’ve been healthy the past few years. I feel like my leadership has definitely improved. I think I can mentor the younger generation… Whatever team I’m on, I put my heart and soul into it,” said Manaea.

Mets’ Aggressive Offseason Strategy

The Mets entered the offseason with significant gaps in their rotation after losing Luis Severino to the Oakland Athletics. With only Kodai Senga and David Peterson as established starters, the front office wasted no time addressing the need for pitching depth.

Before re-signing Manaea, the Mets secured right-handers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes, both in lucrative deals. The moves reflect the team’s commitment to building a competitive rotation capable of carrying them deep into October.

Projected 2025 Mets Rotation: A Blend of Talent and Depth

With Manaea back, the Mets’ rotation looks formidable heading into the 2025 season. Here’s how it shapes up:

  1. Kodai Senga – Returning as the ace, Senga will lead the staff after an impressive 2024 campaign.
  2. Sean Manaea – The reliable lefty provides consistency and veteran leadership.
  3. David Peterson – A homegrown talent continuing to develop into a dependable starter.
  4. Frankie Montas – The hard-throwing righty adds power and postseason experience.
  5. Clay Holmes – Newly acquired and ready to prove his worth in the rotation.

Depth options include Paul Blackburn, Griffin Canning, Tylor Megill, and Jose Butto, giving the Mets flexibility to manage injuries or performance issues throughout the season.

Financial Implications

Before re-signing Manaea, the Mets had approximately $140 million in current 2025 payroll allocations and $238.6 million in projected total commitments, per Spotrac. The Manaea deal pushes those figures higher, but ownership’s willingness to spend underscores their commitment to winning.

Big Picture: Contending in the NL East

The Mets’ rotation overhaul positions them as serious contenders in the NL East and beyond. With Manaea anchoring a group filled with a mix of proven veterans and rising talent, the team is poised to challenge division rivals and aim for a deep postseason run.

As the Mets look to build on their 2024 success, re-signing Manaea sends a clear message: this team is all-in on competing at the highest level. Fans in Queens have plenty to look forward to in 2025.
