Payton Pritchard Aims to Silence Critics with Two-Way Excellence
Boston Celtics backup guard Payton Pritchard has heard the criticism, and he’s using it as fuel to prove doubters wrong. Known for his hustle and sharpshooting, the University of Oregon alum is determined to shed the label of being a defensive liability and establish himself as a true two-way player in the NBA.
“I really want to be known as a two-way player,” Pritchard told CLNS Media following a road win over the Washington Wizards earlier this month. “Sometimes I see things that say I’m a defensive liability, and it irks me. Every game, I go out, and I try to prove that narrative wrong. Me trying to be a complete two-way player is something I will always strive to be.”
While Pritchard isn’t built like the towering Victor Wembanyama, the Celtics guard believes defensive excellence is less about physical attributes and more about effort, focus, and resilience.
“People in the league, they’re going to hit tough shots,” Pritchard explained. “I could play great defense, and they could still hit it, just like they could do on me. I could hit a tough shot with a person right in my grill. It’s just coming back and doing it play after play after play, and by the end of the game, their legs are a little bit tired, so it causes them to miss.”
The West Linn, Oregon native has set lofty goals for his game. “If I can be known as an elite on-ball defender and an elite offensive player, then that’s a big goal of mine,” he said.
Pritchard’s commitment to both ends of the floor reflects his broader role within a Celtics team vying for championship contention. His defensive efforts, combined with his ability to stretch the floor with timely shooting, make him a valuable piece off the bench.

As Pritchard continues to evolve his game, fans and critics alike will watch closely to see if he can achieve his goal of being a true two-way force in the league. One thing is certain: he’s ready for the challenge.
