Quinn Ewers stirred things up on Monday when responding to Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt’s verbal challenge ahead of their College Football Playoff quarterfinal. Ewers, who has been at the center of ongoing quarterback debates, guided Texas (12-2) through a season of doubts, especially after some questioned whether Arch Manning would replace him. Ewers passed for 2,867 yards and 26 touchdowns, while Leavitt, eager to prove himself, declared his intent to show that he’s the better quarterback.
Leavitt, who has used his status as an underdog to fuel his drive, boldly stated, “I’m going to go prove why I’m the better quarterback.” When asked about Leavitt’s comments, Ewers responded somewhat coldly, “Congrats to them on a great season… he’s a talented player, and they’re a fun offense to watch. Just excited to compete against them.” This response stood in stark contrast to the ongoing tension regarding Manning’s role, with many wondering if Manning’s success while Ewers was injured could push Ewers out of the starting spot. Ewers flatly denied any issues, saying, “No,” when asked if the competition had affected their relationship.
While Ewers has been secure in his starting role, Manning’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. Despite not starting, Manning has shown his value as a runner and passer, throwing for 939 yards and nine touchdowns, along with 100 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Manning admitted that adjusting to his backup role was difficult after his high school stardom but emphasized his commitment to helping the team however he could.
Manning spoke of Ewers’ work ethic and professionalism, stating he learned a lot from Ewers’ approach to the game. Ewers also acknowledged their relationship, highlighting the ease of their dynamic. Texas quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee noted that Manning is not just a “wildcat quarterback,” but a versatile asset who could add strategic value in various situations.
