Kansas Football Lands Key Defensive Back Commitment from JJ Dunnigan

The Kansas football coaching staff struck gold on Thursday, securing a major recruit for their 2026 class as JJ Dunnigan, a three-star defensive back from Manhattan High School, pledged to the Jayhawks. Dunnigan, the son of former K-State defensive back James Dunnigan, chose KU over Kansas State, Nebraska, Stanford, and several other top programs.

Dunnigan made his announcement during the first quarter of the Under Armour Next All-America Game at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand, Florida. As part of the first group of juniors to participate in the prestigious event, Dunnigan’s decision to commit to Kansas reflects the program’s growing momentum.

“We’re building something special there, and I’m going to have the ability to play both ways,” Dunnigan said during his announcement on ESPN2, hinting at the versatility and potential that the Jayhawks offer. His commitment not only bolsters KU’s 2026 recruiting class but also strengthens their defensive backfield.

“I’m just very thankful for our kids, their parents, our coaching staff, community, everyone.”

A standout performer at Manhattan High School, Dunnigan impressed on both sides of the ball. During his junior season, he recorded 65 total tackles, six pass breakups, and three interceptions, according to MaxPreps. Offensively, he totaled 556 receiving yards and five touchdowns, showcasing his playmaking ability as a wide receiver and returner.

Dunnigan, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 190 pounds, is ranked as the No. 4 player in Kansas and the No. 50 safety nationally, according to Rivals. His combination of size, athleticism, and football IQ makes him an exciting prospect for the future.

This commitment marks the third overall for Kansas in the 2026 class, and notably, the second in-state addition. The Jayhawks previously landed Jaylen Mason, a quarterback from Wichita Northwest. Additionally, KU’s 2026 class also includes Lennie “Trey” Brown, a cornerback from Tustin, California.

Talent evaluators have been high on Dunnigan’s potential. John Garcia Jr. of Rivals praised Dunnigan’s fluid movement and his ability to track and react to the football. Meanwhile, 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins highlighted Dunnigan’s performance at the All-America practice, calling him “a potential multi-year starter” with the tools to become an impact defender once he refines his skills.

Adding to the excitement, KU has extended a scholarship offer to Dunnigan’s younger brother, Adonis “Donnie” Dunnigan, who is a member of the class of 2029. The Jayhawks are clearly looking to build a family legacy in their defensive backfield, and JJ Dunnigan’s commitment further signals the program’s upward trajectory.

With JJ Dunnigan onboard, Kansas football is poised to make significant strides both in the Big 12 and beyond, as they aim to compete at a higher level in the coming years.
