Could Anthony Evans Return to Oklahoma and Revive the Sooners’ Receiving Corps?
The Oklahoma Sooners have been active in retooling their wide receiver room this offseason, but their work may not be finished. After losing six wideouts to the transfer portal, Oklahoma has added four new faces: Javonnie Gibson, Keontez Lewis, Isaiah Sategna, and Josiah Martin. Even with these additions, there’s speculation the Sooners could be in the market for another weapon to enhance their offense.
Enter Anthony Evans, a familiar name for Oklahoma fans. The former Georgia Bulldog and one-time Oklahoma commit entered the transfer portal on Sunday, according to Hayes Fawcett of On3. Could the Sooners and Evans rekindle their connection?
Evans, a former four-star recruit in the 2023 class, initially pledged to Oklahoma before flipping to Georgia in late 2022. His decision came after a visit to Athens that solidified his choice to join the Bulldogs. While his time at Georgia included flashes of his potential, Evans never fully cracked the rotation.
In two seasons with the Bulldogs, including an 11-game stint in 2024, Evans caught nine passes for 88 yards. While those numbers don’t jump off the page, his explosiveness as a return specialist is notable. Evans averaged 7.6 yards per punt return and 17.7 yards per kick return for the SEC champions, showcasing his speed and ability to contribute on special teams.
Primarily used in Georgia’s screen game, Evans excelled in situations designed to get him into open space, where his athleticism could shine. However, his playing time was limited, with Evans never logging more than 17 snaps in a single game. That lack of opportunity could make a reunion with Oklahoma’s wide receivers coach, Emmett Jones, an appealing prospect for both parties.
For the Sooners, adding Evans would provide another layer of speed and versatility to their offense. His ability to stretch the field and create explosive plays could complement the team’s existing wide receiver talent. Additionally, Evans could bring value as a returner, bolstering Oklahoma’s special teams unit.
